We can’t help but draw comparisons between Julien Vidame’s Parallel Bars Bookshelf—created from just a couple of pieces of plexiglass with strategically drilled holes and an array of anodized aluminum tubes— and that classic kids’ game KerPlunk. More »

Doccaster Debuts A Platform For Location-Based File Sharing And Discussion

Written by  on  Categories: kudos Tags:

doccasterDoccaster wants to disrupt document-sharing, but it’s attacking the space from a new angle: it’s not just about storing files in the “cloud,” it’s about tying files to a location. The company is?launching a beta version of its web-based utility today that lets users upload then broadcast any number of files. Those files immediately become available to anyone within a 15-mile radius and can be searched for either by proximity or by a Doccaster ID (similar to a Twitter ID).

Konka W900 hands-on

Written by  on  Categories: kudos

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, consider Konka the number one practitioner of that “craft.” The company, (in)famous for its OEM-copycatting ways, has set up a booth here at CTIA 2012, letting us get some up close and personal time with its W900. The HTC-esque handset, previously released at this past Mobile World Congress, is yet another in a line of underwhelming Android offerings that subsists on design without delivering on performance. Although, the phone’s official spec sheet lists it as running Ice Cream Sandwich, the build we encountered was actually that of Gingerbread 2.3.6 — a very buggy version, at that. So, don’t let your eyes deceive you, what you’re seeing on the homescreen is simply a third-party launcher made to ape ICS’ more streamlined UI. Beneath that 4-inch WVGA display lies quadband GSM (850, 900, 1800, 1900) and WCDMA (2100) radios, VGA front-facing / rear 5-megapixel cameras, in addition to support for WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, the company couldn’t confirm what processor’s powering this lackluster affair. But no matter, this is one uneven device you can safely ignore.

Terrence O’Brien contributed to this report.

John Edwards Trial: Aide Recounts Wife Raging at Donors Over Rielle Hunter Cover-Up

Written by  on  Categories: kudos Tags: , ,

Former presidential hopeful John Edwards was more “a spectator than a participant” at a 2007 meeting in which his now-deceased wife, Elizabeth, railed at two political donors because they had maintained ties to his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Jennifer Palmieri, a former aide to Edwards who is now the White House deputy director of communications under Barack Obama, said Elizabeth Edwards was angry at Fred Baron and his wife Lisa for taking Hunter on a shopping spree.

“Rielle Hunter was a loose cannon and Fred and Lisa thought it was important to keep the relationship going,” Palmieri said, in describing the 2007 meeting at a hotel in Davenport, Iowa, at which she was present.

“Elizabeth just wanted Rielle out of their lives entirely,” she said.

John Edwards, 58, is accused of violating federal election laws by soliciting more than $900,000 in illegal campaign contributions, mainly from Baron and heiress Rachel “Bunny” Mellon, as he pursued the presidency in 2008.

The federal government contends that he sought money to conceal the affair, knowing revelations that he was cheating on his cancer-stricken wife and had fathered Hunter’s child would destroy his campaign.

At issue is whether John Edwards knew details about efforts by campaign supporters to keep the affair from being publicized during the campaign, or only became aware of them much later, as his lawyers have claimed.

The government says the money should have been reported as political donations because it was meant to protect Edwards’ image and candidacy.

The defense argues that the payments were from one private third party to another and should not be characterized as campaigned contributions.

Edwards has pleaded not guilty. He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine on each count if convicted. The trial is in its third week.

Prosecutors said they expected to conclude their presentation today. and submitted a list of their final witnesses, which did not include Hunter.

‘Beautiful Creatures’: Exclusive First Look At The Magical Set!

Written by  on May 11, 2012 Categories: kudos Tags:

MTV News travels to New Orleans, where four stars of the upcoming YA adaptation talk about the supernatural romance.

NEW ORLEANS — This is a story of boy meets girl. Or, more accurately, boy meets caster.

What is a caster, you may be asking? In the southern gothic world imagined by “Beautiful Creatures” authors Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, casters have magical powers much like witches. Some can seduce men with one lick of a lollipop. Others can mutate their arm into a slithering snake. And still others can channel Mother Nature, bending weather to their will.

This is the supernatural realm MTV News stepped into recently during our exclusive visit to the New Orleans set of “Beautiful Creatures.” While there we got the scoop on the adaptation straight from the film’s four young stars.

“Lena is a young girl who also happens to be a caster, and she’s moved around — she’s moved to a lot of small towns and problems follow her,” Alice Englert told us of her character. “She’s just come to Gatlin, which is so insignificant it doesn’t have a Starbucks, etc., and [the theater] gets the titles of movie names wrong, and everyone thinks I’m a Satanist.”

Just the usual adolescent angst, right? Englert conceded that underneath her supernatural surface, Lena struggles with issues any typical teen would: “I think Lena is like most girls when you feel massively insecure.”

Few things can make one feel more insecure than being bullied by classmates, which just so happened to be the theme of the scene being shot during our visit.

“We’re shooting a scene where there sort of begins this class persecution of Lena, and it’s very blatant,” Englert explained.

“The girls in class are sort of this awful clique of girls, who are always being mean to her, and they start tormenting her,” chimed in co-star Alden Ehrenreich, who plays Lena’s love interest, Ethan.

“It’s getting out of control, and she gets of control,” Englert concluded.

This particular scene was just one of many effects-laden moments scheduled during production — one in which the windows of the classroom shatter in magnificent fashion. “I forgot that we were shooting, and I just stood there, like, [drops jaw], my eyes crossed. It’s going to look so ridiculous,” enthused Zoey Deutch, who plays mean girl Emily. “It’s really fun. It was insane. It was so loud. I really thought there was an earthquake.”

Special effects aside, Deutch was also impressed with the film’s source material, counting herself among the many fans of “Beautiful Creatures.”

“I loved the books, I thought they were incredible,” she said. “I thought they were smart and like nothing I’d ever read before. I’m an avid ‘Harry Potter’ fan, and ['Beautiful Creatures'] was kind of my favorite series I’ve read since then.”

But for those wanting to draw parallels between protagonist Ethan Wate and the Boy Who Lived (or even a certain sparkly vampire), Thomas Mann, who plays Link, said not so fast. “I think it’s definitely going to be unique from those stories,” he assured.

“Beautiful Creatures” hits theaters February 15, 2013.

Google+ for iPhone gets big visual makeover in 2.0 update

Written by  on  Categories: kudos Tags: , ,

Users of the Google+ iPhone app have sometimes complained that their version isn’t given the same love as that for Android users. The TLC level just got a boost today, as a Google+ 2.0 update has remade the app in style: it now has a more immersive “carousel” for streams, with stylized fonts, a greater emphasis on profile photos and a whole lot less of that humdrum white. Actions like a +1 vote are more prominent at the same time. If you’re of the Apple-owning persuasion, you can get the updated app now; Android users are also being teased with a future update that will bring some “extra surprises” within a few weeks.

AT&T cancels plans to release Samsung Skyrocket HD, likely setting sights on Galaxy S III

Written by  on  Categories: kudos Tags: , ,

Remember the Samsung Skyrocket HD for AT&T? Great, now forget it. According to Sammy, the largest GSM carrier has decided to forego the mysteriously absent device, announced all the way back at January’s AT&T Developer Summit, in order to focus on other products. This move adds credence to our suspicions that this particular handset wouldn’t have a distinct place in the lineup alongside the carrier’s version of the Galaxy S III, which hasn’t been officially announced for US availability yet.

We reached out to Samsung, and here’s the company’s official statement on the matter: “AT&T and Samsung have agreed to cancel plans to offer the Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD. We are concentrating resources on other products to bring exciting experiences to consumers.” Not too much of a surprise, but those eagerly awaiting this device shouldn’t get too frazzled — if you can’t wait for Samsung’s newest flagship, at least we’re hopeful that a few carrier-branded prototypes will leak out on eBay to whet your appetite.
