River Bend ? This is written for the men and women diagnosed with prostate cancer. I say men and women because both parties are concerned, and have something about the enemy, as it did before. Are

My name is understood

Lou and I live in New Bern. I remember very clearly sitting with my urologist and hear the words: ?You have prostate cancer.? At this point, if the word ?cancer? is used in the same sentence as the name, there is little else in the debate heard. The only question is rolling around in your mind, ?I?m going to die?? The answer to this question is ?NO.?

Let us take a minute and with the extent of prostate cancer. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men with 218, with 890 new patients with prostate cancer every year added. 27 050 people die each year from its effects.

There are other risk factors such as race and age contribute. African American men have the highest rate of prostate cancer in the world, while the men, who in Craven, Jones and Pamlico counties, the highest mortality rate in North Carolina.

Another factor is the age with the occurrence of prostate cancer in 75 percent of men over 65 to under 65 men left for the remaining 25 percent of newly diagnosed cases. Family history contributes 10 percent to those numbers. It?s safe to say that prostate cancer can not be prevented.

But there is good news. Can be cured if caught at an early stage prostate cancer. And there is help! For the past 15 years our local group One-to-Man 550 men had our programs happen. Men like me who found out that I was not alone and there were men willing to share their experiences and treatments. They have never offered advice, but gave me hope for the future. They provided the basis for many treatments, with the final decision will depend on me.

I was 57 years old when I operated on. I have lived to see my grandchildren grow and saw my children from the same problems of child rearing that I had with my son and daughter. I have so many sunsets and sunrises that I lost track, and it all started with the early observed. On 10 June 1997 began my new life and today I am still cancer free.

Do not let indecision rob you your future. You are invited to One-to-man every second Thursday of each month at Golden Corral, New Bern from 08.30 clock join

Call Louis lives in River Bend.
